AUSTIN is the beautiful Heart of Texas. The city has a strong, rapidly-growing economy and a highly-educated, international population.

Austin became the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1840. The original University of Texas campus was established within walking distance of the Capitol in 1881. During the 1970's and 1980's the financial weight of the city shifted from government to the private sector, predominantly into high-tech electronics and related businesses.

Our magnificent oaks, parks, scenic hills, clear-water creeks and hill country lakes are held with sacred regard, in respect for the spirits of antiquity and futurity who dwell with us.

One of Austin's special charms is its multitude of enjoyable restaurants with food for all tastes, outdoor settings, and views of sunsets over the lakes and hill country horizon. The area is home to numerous wineries, breweries, and delightful settings in which to enjoy their products.

Austin is one of America's major book markets, having many excellent, well-stocked book stores and the largest active Writers League in the country.  We have more competitive internet access providers than any place in America outside Silicon Valley.  Many with recognizable names from Hollywood, as from Silicon Valley, are discovering Austin. You' will find more than the normal share of museums, galleries, parks and gardens here.

Then there's the whole music scene here in "the Live Music Capital of the World." Choose your entertainment from Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Alvin Crow or Austin City Limits. Wander down the Sixth Street entertainment district and drop in where the sounds grab you. In March Austin hosts South by Southwest (SXSW), the internationally acclaimed 10-day music, film and multimedia event. Or get your tickets to Mozart's Don Giovanni, the Austin Symphony, or the UT Longhorn Band playing at a UT football or basketball game.
